Jonah Hill makes a Netflix documentary about his longtime therapist, Phil Stutz. Most of the film is the two of them talking, often in black and white, about Stutz’s simple “Tools” for dealing with pain, fear, and hard days. They share private struggles like body shame, grief after losing brothers, and Stutz’s Parkinson’s disease. The tone is quiet, open, and personal, more like a long therapy chat than a big Hollywood story.
The film is almost entirely about mental health tools, friendship, and private pain. Viewers mainly hear about exercises like the Shadow, Life Force, and gratitude, plus how success and mean press did not fix Hill’s self-worth. Any social angle is soft: two men talk about feelings and grief in plain language. That reads as self-help and care for the mind, not as race politics, gender activism, or identity lectures. Normal viewers will notice honesty and therapy tips far more than any culture-war message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Stutz.
Woke representation / casting
Real subjects are Jonah Hill and Phil Stutz. The film is not a cast of fictional roles filled for diversity signaling. No identity-quota casting pattern is visible.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Talk centers on therapy tools, grief, body shame, fear, and personal growth. No clear activist lines on race, gender ideology, DEI, or left electoral politics stand out for a normal viewer.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core story is private healing and practical mental tools. Soft side theme: men opening up about feelings and loss. That is mild social tone, not race, queer, or identity-politics plot structure.
8%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Hill links harsh media and body pressure to his low self-worth. That is a personal fame/body gripe. The film does not run a broad attack on capitalism, patriarchy, churches, or Western norms as a system.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful anti-woke or right-leaning campaign treats this title as DEI or identity propaganda. Public debate was ethics and praise, not culture-war boycotts of the film’s politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Lead creative Jonah Hill is low (12). A few producers have progressive cause work (animal rights, issue docs, Gaza-related advocacy), but most are low, and that record does not show up as the film’s main message.
