Paul Matthews is a dull college biology teacher and family man. Out of nowhere, millions of strangers start seeing him in their dreams. At first the dreams are boring and make him famous for doing almost nothing. Then the dream version of him turns violent and scary, and the whole world turns against him. The movie is a dark, weird comedy about sudden fame and how fast the crowd can destroy you.
The film is mainly about viral fame, memes, and public shaming. Viewers see a shy man lose his job, his marriage, and his normal life because of nightmares he cannot control. Marketing people try to sell him as a brand, and students refuse his class after “trauma” from the dreams. That is satire of cancel culture and online outrage, not a push for race, gender, or queer activism. Normal viewers notice the fame and pile-on story far more than any identity lecture.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dream Scenario.
Woke representation / casting
Lead is Nicolas Cage as an ordinary white male professor with his wife and daughters at the center. Supporting roles include a black college dean and a few smaller parts for actors of color in a modern campus setting. Casting looks normal for the story world, not like quota-style identity signaling or race/gender swaps of known characters.
10%
Woke political dialogue
People talk about trauma, students quitting class, public apologies, and shaming after the nightmares. A PR team even floats right-wing talk shows. The movie uses that language to mock pile-ons and fame, not to preach activist identity politics. Viewers hear culture-war talk, but as satire of outrage, not as a sermon for it.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
The core story is sudden fame, losing control of your image, and being destroyed by the crowd. It shows vanity and male insecurity, but race, gender ideology, and queer identity are not the engine of the plot. Cancel culture and attention culture drive the themes more than DEI-style identity storylines.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
It mocks ad firms, brand deals, and companies turning people into products, including the idea of ads inside dreams. Campus leaders drop Paul when students freak out. That jabs at modern outrage habits and marketing more than at faith, family, or classic Western life as evil. Mild “business will sell anything” satire is clear; activist identity framing is not.

Woke character or canon changes

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Coverage and social posts mostly treat the film as cancel-culture and viral-fame satire. Some conservative-leaning viewers praised that angle. There is no major anti-woke wave claiming the movie itself pushes DEI, race, or queer agenda content.
0%
Creator track record context
Writer-director Borgli’s cached record is near zero for woke activism and centers black comedy about fame and shaming. Key producers and casting leads also score low. Their track records do not point to an identity-first or activist project.
