Dreamland follows 17-year-old Eugene Evans, a restless farm boy living with his mother, stepfather, and little sister in 1930s Texas. Dust storms, failed crops, and foreclosure threaten the family farm, while Eugene dreams of finding his missing father and living like the outlaws in his magazines. He finds wounded bank robber Allison Wells hiding in the barn and must choose between claiming the reward or helping her escape to Mexico. The film is a slow, dark coming-of-age thriller with a tense romance, family conflict, gun violence, and a sad ending.
The film gives its most skilled and controlling criminal role to a woman, while Eugene becomes her helper, follower, and romantic partner. Allison says banks and the police ruined her life, and the story lets her explain crime as a way to take back what was lost. A named Indigenous friend, Joe Garza, adds a small identity and history thread. These ideas sit inside the crime and family plot, and the movie also shows Allison as a liar and dangerous killer rather than a simple hero.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dreamland.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast does not show a diversity-first pattern. Joe Garza is a single Indigenous supporting character in a Texas setting, and the film does not frame his casting as an identity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Allison says the banks took her land and blames police gunfire for a child’s death during a robbery. The opening narration says banks came for Bismark after crops failed. A preacher and local lawmen are shown as voices of fear or control. The film does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist slogans, so this remains a mild anti-bank and anti-authority thread.
20%
Identity-driven story themes
Allison is the most experienced and forceful criminal in the main pair. Eugene follows her plans, hides her, and joins her robbery while she controls much of the romance. The story flips the usual outlaw pairing by making the young male character the admirer and helper of a female outlaw. The film also shows her as manipulative and violent, so the role reversal is mixed with a warning about crime rather than a simple empowerment message.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film criticizes banks, police, and a preacher within its Dust Bowl crime story. The story does not frame these problems as a modern attack on Western culture, Christianity, or family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original period crime story. No established character or source story is being reworked.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke complaints were found in the supplied X pass or the wider coverage reviewed. Audience comments mostly discuss the slow pace, story, cast, and visuals.
0%
Creator track record context
The director has a moderate record of stories about sexuality, gender roles, family conflict, and bigotry. Interviews about Dreamland focus on period research, world-building, and moral choices, not on DEI or representation. Margot Robbie and LuckyChap have supported complex female stories and more opportunities for women behind the camera. The writer and most other producers have no clear public record of identity-focused activism.
