Official Secrets follows Katharine Gun, a young British translator who works for the spy office GCHQ in 2003. She reads a secret American memo asking Britain to gather private information on United Nations officials so their countries will support the Iraq invasion. Gun sends the memo to the press because she believes the war is being pushed through lies and unfair pressure. The leak costs her job, freedom, family life, and peace of mind as police and officials close in.
The film makes anti-war politics its main message. It presents George W. Bush, Tony Blair, intelligence agencies, and parts of the press as hiding facts and using power to win support. It also shows the government threatening Gun’s Turkish and Muslim husband with deportation, which adds an immigration and state-power theme. The ending stresses conscience, truth, and the cost of challenging government power.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Official Secrets.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Casting largely tracks real historical figures, with Keira Knightley (white British) as the actual Katharine Gun. Supporting roles include Adam Bakri (Middle Eastern descent) as Turkish Kurd husband Yasar and Indira Varma (South Asian descent) as lawyer Shami Chakrabarti, aligning with the real individuals' backgrounds. No prominent audience-visible identity signaling, quota-style representation in lead roles, or story-world mismatches. The central female role stems from documented events rather than engineered emphasis.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeatedly calls the Iraq invasion illegal and shows Katharine and journalists condemning Bush and Blair for misleading the public. The dialogue praises public protest, whistleblowing, and loyalty to ordinary people over the government. These are clear anti-war and classical left political ideas, and the film gives them a large share of its dialogue.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes Yasar’s Turkish and Muslim identity part of the story. Officials use his vulnerable immigration status when they threaten to deport him after Katharine leaks the memo. The subplot links state power to the danger faced by an immigrant family, but it stays tied to the real case and does not become the main message.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows the US and UK governments, intelligence offices, police, courts, and parts of the press hiding facts or protecting power. The story makes this abuse central to the Iraq War plot and to the threat against Yasar. The story keeps this focus on the 2003 decisions and the rule of law instead of turning it into a broad attack on Western culture, capitalism, Christianity, or family life.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is a biographical drama adapted from a nonfiction book on documented real events and people. No established fictional canon, legacy characters, or historical figures receive identity-driven or ideological reinterpretations.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Coverage and online reaction around release centered on the Iraq War history, whistleblower heroism, and journalistic/government accountability. No significant volume of anti-woke or right-leaning complaints specifically framed the film as advancing woke, DEI, identity politics, or representation agendas. Discussions remained in the lane of classical political disagreement over the war or film execution.
