Laura returns from Buenos Aires to her small Spanish hometown with her two children for her sister’s wedding. The warm family party turns dark when her teenage daughter Irene disappears and a ransom message arrives. Laura turns to Paco, her former lover and a local vineyard owner, while her husband Alejandro comes from Argentina. The family tries to save Irene without calling the police, and old secrets make every relative a possible threat. The film has a slow, tense, talk-heavy tone that mixes crime mystery with family drama.
The film’s main social themes are class, property, faith, family duty, and suspicion of foreign grape workers. Relatives resent Paco because he was once the family’s servant and later became a successful landowner. The story also makes motherhood and the question of who Irene’s birth father is part of the mystery. Alejandro leans on faith after the kidnapping, while Laura answers with anger and doubt. These ideas shape the family’s choices, while secrets, fear, guilt, and the cost of the past remain the film’s main concerns.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Everybody Knows.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is Spanish or Argentine, which fits the story’s setting and family history. The film does not present its cast as a diversity statement or an identity showcase.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The family argues over whether land should belong to the person who works it or the person who owns it. The characters also discuss blaming foreign workers when a crime happens. These lines add a mild class and anti-prejudice message to the mystery. The film keeps the talk inside family arguments and does not build it into an activist speech.
23%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes motherhood and paternity part of the central secret. Laura hides that Paco is Irene’s birth father and once considers ending the pregnancy. The family argues about whether blood or years of care make someone a father. The story treats these as painful private choices, not as a modern identity campaign.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows relatives blaming foreign grape workers before the facts are known. The film also makes old class resentment central to the land fight between Laura’s family and Paco. The story presents these views as prejudice and bitterness that damage trust. The conflict stays tied to one village and does not become a broad attack on capitalism, religion, or Western institutions.
31%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story and does not adapt established characters or rewrite a known historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke complaints. Reviewed audience posts and news coverage focused on pacing, plot, performances, and family themes, not DEI or identity politics.
