Beth is a music tech who learns she is pregnant and visits her sister Ellie in a run-down Los Angeles apartment. Ellie is raising three kids alone after her partner left. After an earthquake opens a sealed vault under the building, Ellie's son Danny finds a cursed book and old records that call up flesh-taking demons. The film becomes brutal possession horror as the family is trapped and forced to fight a monster version of their mother and each other.
The story centers on twisted motherhood, sibling love, and bloody survival. The main audience-visible identity choice is that teenage boy Danny is played by transgender actor Morgan Davies, while the character is written as a normal teen son with no gender plot or dialogue. A middle child is lightly marked as a climate-protest kid, but that trait does not drive the plot. The movie stays focused on classic Evil Dead scares and gore rather than political messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Evil Dead Rise.
Woke representation / casting
Transgender actor Morgan Davies plays teenage boy Danny in a clear supporting family role. The character has no gender story or dialogue, so the identity signal comes from casting, not from the script. Some viewers and culture-war reviews treat that choice as representation-first casting. Other cast picks fit a modern city family and do not form a broader identity pattern.
45%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No political speeches, activist language, or ideological discussions appear; all conversations stay within family tension, pregnancy news, and horror survival.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present in this title.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. No framing of traditional family structures, masculinity, religion, or Western norms as flawed or oppressive; religious and demonic elements function as standard horror tropes without modern activist reinterpretation.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. this is an original story with new characters and an apartment setting while preserving classic Evil Dead possession rules.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some viewers and anti-woke outlets complained about the transgender casting as woke signaling or a diversity hire. Reddit and YouTube threads also called the film woke over female leads or soft progressive touches. That pushback was clear but stayed niche and did not lead mainstream coverage.
32%
Creator track record context
Key creatives have low cached woke scores and little public identity activism. Cronin and lead-actor interviews stress blood, practical scares, and family horror rather than social messaging. That track record supports a low context score for this film.
