Donya is a young Afghan refugee who used to work as a translator for the United States Army. She lives alone in Fremont, California, and works at a fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. Insomnia and guilt over family and friends left in Afghanistan make it hard for her to settle into her new life. The film uses dry humor, long quiet talks, and a slow search for friendship and love.
Fremont puts Afghan refugee life and the experience of an Afghan woman at the center of nearly every scene. Donya speaks about being called a traitor and says other translators did not accept her because she was a woman. The film also shows Afghan neighbors, Chinese factory owners, and a white mechanic, but these choices fit the places and people in the story. Its main message is that a displaced person can seek work, love, and a normal life without being reduced to a helpless victim.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Fremont.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers an Afghan refugee woman and casts Anaita Wali Zada, a real Afghan refugee, in her first role. The story also includes Afghan neighbors, Chinese factory workers, and a white mechanic. These choices fit Fremont, San Francisco, and the refugee story, so the cast does not look like a forced mix. Jalali and Wali Zada still frame the lead as a way to show Afghan women in a more positive and personal way.
34%
Woke political dialogue
The film briefly says that Donya was not accepted by other translators because she was a woman. The doctor calls her a pioneer because few women did that work. The rest of the dialogue covers sleep, guilt, work, love, and refugee life instead of repeating activist ideas.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
The story is built around Donya’s identity as an Afghan refugee and former translator. It returns to her survivor’s guilt, family separation, language barriers, and trouble fitting into a new country. It also makes her experience as a woman in a male-heavy job part of her explanation for isolation. The film treats her as a full person who wants work, love, and a normal life, but refugee identity and Afghan womanhood remain the central lens. The film stays quiet and personal rather than becoming a campaign or lecture.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not attack Western families, Christianity, capitalism, or modern institutions. Its conflicts come from war, exile, grief, and loneliness.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Donya and does not change a known character, book, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X check found no anti-woke reaction. The reviewed news, Reddit, and audience pages showed praise or complaints about the slow pace, not claims that the film pushes woke or DEI ideas.

Creator track record context
Jalali’s public work often focuses on migrants, minorities, and anti-stereotyping. Cavalli’s public work often focuses on women’s inner lives and unusual female characters. Several producers have supported refugee, immigrant, women-led, and culturally specific stories. Other producers have little identity-focused history, so the combined context is moderate rather than dominant.
