Popular college student Laura accepts a Facebook friend request from lonely classmate Marina. When Marina becomes too clingy, Laura unfriends her. Marina then kills herself on camera and returns as a demonic force. She murders Laura’s friends through social media and black-mirror occult magic. Her aim is to leave Laura as friendless as she once was.
This is a conventional supernatural teen horror plot dressed in social media clothes. The real story is about popularity versus loneliness, hollow online friendship, bullying trauma in Marina’s past, and witchcraft with black mirrors, wasps, and satanic-cult mother lore. Themes stay on social media risk, rejection, and revenge from beyond the grave. Soft morals about kindness and bullying exist, but they read as generic human caution, not race, gender, queer, or DEI politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Friend Request.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Modern-campus friend group is ordinary horror casting with mostly white leads, a Latino roommate, and a black detective in a small role, with no audience-visible identity-quota pattern, race or gender swaps, or diversity-as-statement marketing.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No activist or identity-politics dialogue. Talk stays on Facebook, friendship, fear, and the curse.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Core story is a social-media curse, loneliness, and revenge. Bullying and outcast empathy are generic horror, not race, gender, queer, or DEI messaging.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Facebook and online danger are tech caution, not activist attacks on Western institutions, masculinity, family norms, or Christianity. Occult is the threat, not progressive culture war.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story, not an identity-driven rewrite of established characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No notable right-leaning or anti-woke complaints that the film pushes DEI or identity politics. Criticism is about quality and tone.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached creatives are mostly low. Mild lifts come from Verhoeven and Ballen without a strong activist pattern. Neither clearly shapes this film’s content. The film itself is not sold on identity framing.
