Robert Bleichner is a talented but smug teenage cartoonist from a comfortable home in Princeton, New Jersey. After his art teacher dies in a strange car crash, Robert drops out of school and moves to a dirty basement in Trenton. He takes small jobs and chases Wallace, a troubled former comics worker, because he thinks Wallace can teach him how to become a real artist. The movie uses crude jokes, sexual drawings, ugly rooms, and sudden violence to create a bleak and uncomfortable comedy. The story includes Miles, Robert’s black best friend, and hints that Miles may have feelings for Robert. It also includes references to same-sex attraction in the comics and in a few story moments. These queer elements remain brief and stay behind the main story about art, bad mentors, spoiled rebellion, male friendship, and family conflict. Robert’s dream of becoming a true artist matters more to the plot than any identity issue.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Funny Pages.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is mostly white and male, with Miles as a black friend in a modern New Jersey setting. The film does not frame his race or the casting as a diversity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on comics, sex, school, family, and bad choices. The teacher’s advice to “always subvert everything” is about art, not identity politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Miles, a black teen, is Robert’s close friend, and the film hints that Miles may have feelings for him. The movie also includes references to same-sex attraction in the comic art and in a few story moments. These details are brief and remain secondary to Robert’s art career and self-destructive choices. The film does not make queer identity the main conflict.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows Robert rejecting his comfortable parents, school, and college plans, but it treats him as selfish and confused. It does not attack capitalism, Christianity, patriarchy, or Western institutions with modern activist claims.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story about Robert, Wallace, and their friends. It does not change a known character, comic, historical person, or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke complaint was found in the reviewed X, Reddit, or news material. Public discussion centered on crude humor, nudity, strange characters, and the film’s quality.
0%
Creator track record context
The stored context gives Owen Kline and most producers low woke scores. Oscar Boyson has a higher score because of comments about social issues and making room for outsiders. Bernard Telsey has a higher score because of his office’s diversity and anti-racist work. These signals stay outside the film’s main story.
