Richard Smith leads his British family to the remote Swedish island of Svalta for a holiday. Richard and Susan hope to enjoy time with their two teenage children, Jessie and Sam, but the islanders warn them that they have arrived during a violent local festival. The family stays despite the warnings and soon faces a hidden killer, strange customs, and a growing trail of blood. The film mixes family jokes, folk horror, sudden twists, and very graphic violence.
The local festival acts out an island history of hunger, quarantine, and cannibalism. The film first presents the Smiths as careless visitors, then reveals that they are a family of violent killers who treat murder as vacation fun. Richard, Susan, Jessie, and Sam use lies, teamwork, and cruel jokes while they attack the islanders. The story focuses on family disorder, outsider behavior, local tradition, and black comedy.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Get Away.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The visible cast shows a white British and Irish family and Finnish island residents, which fits the story’s setting. The film does not present casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers holiday plans, family arguments, local warnings, the festival, and murder. It does not make modern activist or identity-politics claims.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows a violent family, an isolated island, a dark local festival, and a clash between visitors and residents. Race, gender, sexuality, and modern DEI ideas do not drive the plot.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows British visitors ignoring local warnings and recalls a harsh history tied to British quarantine. It uses that history for folk horror and dark comedy, not for a continuing attack on Western institutions or social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Get Away is an original story rather than an adaptation of an established character, series, book, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no on-topic anti-woke complaints, boycott effort, or review-bombing. Wider reviews and posts discuss the film’s gore, twist, humor, and uneven plot instead.
0%
Creator track record context
Nick Frost has said his views do not align with J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans positions. That is a clear pro-trans public stance, but interviews about Get Away do not frame the film around it. Steffen Haars has no high-confidence record of activist or DEI work. The wider creative group is mostly tied to commercial genre films, with only mild social-justice links.
