Beth Keller is a shy teenager who loves writing scary stories. She moves with her mother Pauline and sister Vera into a remote house left by an aunt. Two killers attack the family, and the sisters carry the damage for years. The film shifts between the house, Beth's imagined adult life, and a grim fight to face what happened.
Ghostland puts three women at the center of a family survival story. Beth is shown as a gifted writer, while Vera's practical side helps pull her sister back to reality. A killer appears in a wig and makeup, and the film uses that gender-crossing look as part of its horror shock. The main ideas are trauma, sisterly loyalty, escape through stories, and the cost of turning pain into art.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ghostland.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The story centers on a mother and her two daughters because they are one family. The gender-crossing killer is a horror disguise, not a diversity or identity casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not discuss elections, laws, parties, or current activist causes. The dialogue stays focused on fear, family, trauma, and survival.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives one killer a gender-crossing look with a wig, makeup, and women's clothes. The reveal is used as a frightening surprise, and the character is later described as one of two men. The story never explains the character's identity or builds a wider queer theme around it. This is a brief identity-linked horror device rather than a central message.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows brutal attacks on women, but it does not turn them into a modern critique of patriarchy, male entitlement, or Western institutions. The story treats the violence as a horror threat and trauma, not as a political lesson.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Ghostland is an original story, so it does not change an established character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Web and review debate centered on gore, plot problems, alleged transphobia and misogyny, and a set injury, not claims that the film pushes DEI or left-wing politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Pascal Laugier has a cached score of 0 and no strong DEI or activist record. Carmen Kotyk, Jean-Charles Levy, and Nicolas Manuel have cached scores of 9, and Scott Kennedy has a cached score of 2. Some cached profiles mention inclusive casting or a kinder, more sustainable future, but they do not show a strong activist pattern. The group adds only a very weak context signal.
