Famous detective Benoit Blanc goes to a rich tech boss’s private island in Greece. The boss, Miles Bron, invites his flashy friends for a fake murder-mystery party during the COVID lockdown. Real secrets and real deaths break out. The tone is bright, funny, and sharp, with big set pieces and a puzzle that peels back layer by layer.
A normal viewer will notice clear progressive politics mixed into the mystery. The film mocks a men’s-rights streamer, cancel-culture fame, sellout politicians, and dumb tech billionaires. Blanc is shown living with a male partner, and the writer-director said the character is gay. The hero role is twin black sisters: a smart tech founder who was robbed of her idea, and her sister who fights for justice. Those identity and politics bits sit on top of a big anti-rich satire, so many viewers will clock the messaging without it being the only thing on screen.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
Woke representation / casting
Diverse lead roles stand out: Janelle Monáe as dual black heroines (tech founder and avenging sister), Leslie Odom Jr. as head scientist, Jessica Henwick in a key support role, and Blanc confirmed gay with a male partner on screen. Modern elite setting does not erase a clear pattern of identity-visible casting in smart, central roles. Not pure marketing-only quotas, but a normal viewer can see the emphasis.
50%
Woke political dialogue
Characters joke and argue about cancel culture, men’s-rights talk, COVID lockdowns, and empty “disrupter” rich-people speak. Duke’s manosphere lines are written to sound dumb. Progressive political banter is frequent enough to notice, not a full-time lecture track.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Confirmed gay detective with on-screen male partner adds strong weight. Men’s-rights / macho streamer culture is mocked. Twin black sisters are the moral and brain center wronged by a white tech billionaire. Core plot is still “rich fraud gets exposed,” but identity layers are audience-visible.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Heavy mockery of tech-billionaire worship, men’s-rights influencers, sellout politicians, and fake “disruption.” Toxic-masculinity and right-leaning streamer types are punchlines. Generic rich-people satire is the spine; modern activist framing of gender and right-wing media culture raises the score above plain class comedy.
52%
Woke character or canon changes
Franchise lead Benoit Blanc is confirmed gay here, with Hugh Grant as partner. Johnson said it is a fact in the movies. That is an identity-driven shift for an established character. Other main roles are new originals, not race or gender swaps of known icons.
40%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Right-leaning critics and users called out leftist politics, “woke” messaging, the gay reveal, COVID/mask bits, and manosphere satire (e.g. Shapiro politics criticism, “woke mess” takes, “agenda” user reviews). Complaints exist and are clearly anti-woke/anti-left. They were noticeable, not the only story about the film.
48%
Creator track record context
Rian Johnson’s cached 70 score and public progressive pattern (representation, social satire, Last Jedi debates) dominate, since he wrote and directed. Other listed producers and craft names are mostly low. Johnson’s track record is the main context that matches this film’s tone.
