Johnny Saxby is a young sheep farmer who runs a failing family farm in rural Yorkshire. He drinks heavily, has rough casual sex, and keeps his anger locked inside while caring for his injured father. When Gheorghe, a Romanian farm worker, arrives for lambing season, Johnny first treats him with suspicion and contempt. The two men slowly form a private relationship that forces Johnny to face his fear of love and change. The film is quiet, bleak, physical, and often very intimate.
The main woke element is a central queer romance between two men. The film presents their relationship as real, tender, and worth preserving, rather than as a tragic warning. The story gives a sympathetic place to a Romanian migrant worker and shows Johnny moving away from hostility toward him. It questions a hard form of masculinity built on silence, drinking, sex, and duty. It treats emotional openness and a life with another man as the path toward hope, while it does not use long political speeches or a broad campaign message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for God's Own Country.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a British Yorkshire farmer and a Romanian worker in roles that match the story. It does not show a diversity-first group or frame casting as an identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue is sparse and personal. The film includes hostility toward Gheorghe, but it does not turn immigration, Brexit, or identity politics into a speech-driven political message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers a romantic and sexual relationship between two men. The story presents queer love as real, lasting, and worth choosing. Gheorghe's migrant background adds a second identity difference to the relationship. The film also treats emotional openness as a better path than the hard masculine life Johnny has followed.
90%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Johnny trapped by a hard, traditional idea of manhood. Johnny uses drinking, rough sex, and silence to avoid feeling. Gheorghe's patience helps him accept care and build a softer life. The story also moves Johnny from hostility toward a Romanian worker to trust, but it does not make the farm or family part of a broad political attack.
39%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about a Yorkshire farmer and a Romanian worker. It does not change an established character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Searches found praise, mixed reviews, and discussion of the gay romance and migrant story, not a real anti-woke campaign. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction.
