Young J.R.R. Tolkien grows up poor in England after losing both parents. He finds a home with Father Francis and forms a close club with three school friends. He falls in love with pianist Edith Bratt while he works toward Oxford. The First World War then sends him into the Battle of the Somme and puts the friends at risk.
The film links his love of words, art, friendship, and loss to ideas behind his later fantasy books. Tolkien and Edith share a serious romance that is held back by his guardian's rule. Edith speaks her mind and supports his love of language, but the story stays centered on their relationship. The war scenes show grief and fear as the group tries to hold onto its hope of changing the world through art.

Creator track record context
Writer Stephen Beresford has made work centered on gay history and equality. Director Dome Karukoski made a film about gay-rights figure Tom of Finland. Writer David Gleeson has used gay and refugee characters in earlier films. The title itself does not turn those past interests into its main story.
