Opportunity is a small NASA Mars rover sent in 2003 for a short 90-day job. She and her twin Spirit keep working for years while a team on Earth steers them and frets over every breakdown. The film mixes real mission video, interviews, and Mars scenes built with special effects. The tone is warm, hopeful, and often tearful, like a family story about tough little robots and the people who love them.
This is mainly a feel-good science adventure about teamwork, grit, and the bond between engineers and their machines. Viewers see real NASA staff of many backgrounds, and the makers said they hoped girls might see women on the team and dream about space jobs. Angela Bassett narrates. Those notes sit in the background. The heart of the movie is rovers lasting far past their plan, dust storms, sand traps, and the search for signs of water on Mars.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Good Night Oppy.
Woke representation / casting
Real NASA workers on screen include women and people of color who really flew the mission. Angela Bassett narrates. Makers said they hoped girls would see women in STEM and feel welcome. That is light, intentional role-model framing, not made-up cast quotas in a fiction story.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Dialogue centers on the mission, fixes, and love for the rovers. Outside interviews touch Mars climate history as science. The film is not built on activist slogans or identity lectures.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Main themes are grit, teamwork, science finds about water, and treating the rovers like family. Mild “anyone can do STEM” inspiration sits around the edges, not as the main plot or identity fight.
11%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film cheers NASA, JPL problem-solving, and American space work. It reads more like a love letter to the program than a modern hit on Western culture or institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear right-leaning or anti-woke wave treating the film as DEI or identity propaganda. Praise and soft “too cute / NASA cheerleading” notes dominate.
0%
Creator track record context
Lead director/writer Ryan White has a strong LGBTQ-rights documentary record; producer Jessica Hargrave shares much of that slate. Co-writer Helen Kearns is milder; co-director David Paul Jacobson and several producers score near zero. This title itself is a space science human story, not a queer rights film.
