Her Smell follows Becky Something, the loud and gifted singer of the 1990s punk band Something She. Her drug use, anger, and wild behavior break apart her band, hurt her family, and scare away the people who still love her. The story moves through backstage rooms, recording spaces, and Becky’s home as she falls from fame and later tries to get sober. The tone is harsh, noisy, and often painful, but the last part gives her a small chance to repair the damage.
The film keeps women at the center through several all-female punk bands, with Becky as the leader and other women as her bandmates, rivals, and helpers. It also includes lesbian musicians and a stable relationship between Marielle and another woman. A few lines praise the band as the first and only girl band to sell so many records, and Becky says she wants to be surrounded by women. These points make gender and queer identity visible, but the main story stays focused on addiction, fame, family, friendship, and taking responsibility rather than a political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Her Smell.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers several all-female punk bands and puts women in the main music roles. The 1990s punk setting gives those choices a clear story reason. Perry frames the women as able to be as raw and powerful as male rock stars. The pattern is visible, but it does not look like a broad diversity program.
27%
Woke political dialogue
The film has a few direct lines about gender and female status. Becky calls Something She the first and only girl band to sell so many records. She also says she wants to be surrounded by women, while Marielle calls herself a free woman. These lines are brief and do not become a long activist speech.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
The film follows women musicians through collapse, rivalry, and recovery. Becky’s final return depends on support from several women, and the ending gathers them into one shared performance. The story treats female friendship and women’s creative power as important ways to rebuild a life. The main conflict is still addiction and responsibility, so the identity message is strong but not the whole plot.
43%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a troubled female band, a male ex-husband, and male music workers, but it does not build a modern critique of men, patriarchy, Christianity, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The story uses fictional bands and characters rather than established characters, an adaptation, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A niche review criticized the scenes where women praise Becky as female-empowerment pandering. The complaint treats the women-centered support circle as a message aimed at modern audiences. No broad boycott, review-bombing, or organized anti-woke backlash appears, and the supplied X pass found none.
8%
Creator track record context
The cached creator scores are mostly low to mild, with Alex Ross Perry at 5/100 and Elisabeth Moss at 40/100. Moss has supported stories about women’s rights, and one producer has an association with transgender representation through past work. Perry’s title interviews focus on rock music, character, and structure rather than an activist campaign. This gives the factor a mild score.
