I Am Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger was an Australian actor who moved from Perth to Hollywood and became known for bold roles. The documentary follows his rise from a young performer to a major star through home movies, family memories, and talks with friends and people who worked with him. It shows his work in films such as 10 Things I Hate About You, Brokeback Mountain, and The Dark Knight. The story also follows his love of cameras, music, photography, directing, and his life as a father before his sudden death in 2008. The tone is warm, sad, and full of praise, and it spends more time on his creative life than on the details of his death.

The clearest identity-related part comes when the film discusses Brokeback Mountain. Friends and Ang Lee describe Ledger's role as a gay cowboy and talk about the fear, pain, and self-hatred inside that story. The film treats his choice to play the role as brave and important because the characters challenged the usual image of the American cowboy. This section is part of a wider story about acting and personal risk, not the main subject of the documentary. The rest of the film centers on art, friendship, family, fatherhood, and the loss felt after Ledger died.
