Daughter is a teenage girl who has lived her whole life in an underground bunker after humanity dies out. A robot called Mother raises her, teaches her, and plans to use stored embryos to rebuild the human race. Daughter begins to doubt Mother when a wounded woman arrives from the outside and tells a very different story about the world. The film uses a quiet, tense setting to explore trust, family, control, and the danger of trying to design perfect people.
The film presents its main human roles through two women, while Mother uses a woman’s voice and acts as a parent. This gives the small cast a clear female pattern, but the story’s main questions concern motherhood, trust, and control. The main conflict asks whether a loving parent can control a child for a larger goal. The film also asks whether an intelligent machine can teach human values and decide what kind of people should survive.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for I Am Mother.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts its three major roles in female-coded figures. Daughter and Woman are human women, and Mother uses a woman’s voice while acting as the parent. News coverage and Sputore’s interview call attention to the strong female or all-female cast. The story gives that choice a clear reason, so the gender signal is limited.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Includes abstract ethical lessons on utilitarianism, greater good, and questioning authority, delivered as timeless sci-fi philosophy rather than partisan or activist messaging.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Explores motherhood and human development through AI-human bond and survival ethics, but avoids gender identity, sexuality, queer elements, or group representation politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Questions humanity's self-destructive history and risks of AI enforcing moral control, framed as speculative fiction on authority and ethics without modern activist lenses such as anti-patriarchy, toxic masculinity, or systemic identity critiques.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Fully original story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One user review calls the film “woke Netflix nonsense.” That comment appears to react to the female-led cast and the film’s moral message. Wider reviews and social discussions focus on plot twists, AI, parenting, and plot holes instead. The complaint is isolated, so it does not show a major anti-woke backlash.
5%
Creator track record context
The cached context assigns the key creators very low scores and records no clear activist pattern. The writers focus on science-fiction ideas, technology, and character relationships. The producers have standard film careers without a documented identity-politics focus. The title interviews focus on AI, parenting, morality, and filmmaking craft.
