Ideal Home follows Erasmus Brumble, a wealthy Santa Fe cooking show host, and Paul, his longtime partner and producer. Their stylish life is already strained by drinking, selfish choices, and constant arguments. The trouble grows when Bill, a ten-year-old boy and Erasmus’s unknown grandson, arrives after his father is jailed. The comedy mixes rude jokes, adult problems, and a softer family story as the men learn to care for the child.
Gay identity is not a side detail because the main romance is between two men and their new home becomes a same-sex family. The film shows gay romance, sex jokes, a child’s school talk about gay history and slurs, and a final set of photos of real same-sex parents. The story treats the couple as able to raise a child, even though they start as selfish and unreliable adults. The identity message stays tied to family, love, and acceptance instead of becoming a wider political debate.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ideal Home.
Woke representation / casting
The two lead roles are a gay couple, played by Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd. Their sexuality appears in the romance, sex jokes, family plot, and marketing, so queer representation is highly visible. The film does not use a broad mix of identity groups or a one-of-each cast. Fleming said he considered gay actors and tried to place gay performers in smaller roles, which adds a clear identity focus to the casting.
32%
Woke political dialogue
Bill gives a school talk about living with two gay men. He says being gay was once illegal and lists slurs that should not be used. The scene teaches a simple identity and tolerance message through school dialogue. The material is brief and the movie does not make political debate a continuing part of the story.
27%
Identity-driven story themes
The whole story centers on a gay couple who become parents to a boy. The couple’s relationship and their fight to keep the family together drive the main plot. The film treats same-sex parenting as loving and workable after the men grow up and put the child first. Real same-sex families appear during the end credits, turning the ending into an open celebration of queer family life.
92%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not attack churches, capitalism, men, or Western institutions. Child services appears as a practical custody problem, not as a target of activist criticism. The story supports a same-sex family without building a wider attack on traditional families or social systems.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about invented characters. It does not change a known character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction. Web reviews discussed gay stereotypes, straight actors, and whether the film was too gay, but those were mainly left or queer-side criticisms rather than a clear anti-woke campaign.

Creator track record context
Cached context gives writer-director Andrew Fleming a 31/100 score and notes his queer project Uncoupled. His interviews about this film link it to his own life and his wish to celebrate same-sex families. Most cached producer scores are low, though Gabrielle Tana and Maria Teresa Arida are moderate. The wider creative record supports a mild context signal, not a broad activist pattern.
