In 1951, Marcus Messner leaves his family’s kosher butcher shop in Newark for a small Christian college in Ohio. The smart Jewish student wants to study, avoid the Korean War draft, and escape his worried father. He falls for Olivia Hutton, a bright but troubled classmate who is much more open about sex than he is. Marcus then clashes with the dean, his parents, and the rules that control student life. The film is a quiet, tense drama about love, fear, faith, and the cost of one angry choice.
The film centers its social message on sexual repression, religious control, and the unfair treatment of Olivia. Marcus rejects compulsory chapel and argues for atheism, while the dean treats his beliefs as a threat to school order. Olivia is judged as damaged and immoral after her sexual past becomes known, while Marcus is punished mainly for breaking school rules. The story presents personal freedom and resistance to social pressure as important, but it keeps those ideas inside a tragic 1951 coming-of-age story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Indignation.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast fits the period and place, with Jewish roles tied to the story. The film does not use a visibly diverse or identity-first cast.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Marcus rejects compulsory chapel and argues for atheism. Marcus and Dean Caudwell hold a long debate about religion, free thought, socialism, and war. The scene is important, but its ideas belong to the 1951 setting and do not use modern DEI language.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
Marcus resists rules that demand religious and social conformity. Olivia is open about sex, but the school and other students treat her as damaged and shameful. The film shows a gender double standard because Marcus is judged less harshly for sex than Olivia. The story supports personal freedom and criticizes the way Olivia is shamed for sex, making these themes a recurring part of the romance and its tragic ending.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Christian college requires chapel and controls student life. The dean questions Marcus’s atheism and treats his Jewish background and private choices with suspicion. The film also shows parents and school leaders trying to control a young man’s love life. This is a repeated critique of religion, family authority, and social rules, but it is mostly tied to the 1951 story rather than a broad modern attack on Western culture.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film keeps Marcus as Roth’s Jewish male student and Olivia as his female love interest. It removes a pregnancy detail from the novel and combines minor roles, but those changes do not alter a character’s race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A conservative family review attacks Marcus’s atheist arguments and calls the Christian dean’s portrayal “politically correct.” The review also objects to the film’s anti-Christian tone. This is one niche complaint, not a broad anti-woke reaction, and the X pass found no anti-woke posts.
8%
Creator track record context
James Schamus has a progressive and identity-adjacent public record, including LGBTQ-focused film work and recent Palestine-related activism. Avy Kaufman has a history of casting projects with strong LGBTQ themes and diverse ensembles. The other listed producers and the script supervisor have little public record of activist or DEI work. This raises the context score, but the film itself is a period drama without diversity-first casting.
