In late 1980s Derry, Maine, Pennywise kills Georgie and then hunts other children. Bill and the Losers Club face a shape shifting creature that feeds on fear. They also deal with bullies and broken homes. The main themes are childhood friendship, trauma, bullying, and the end of innocence. The story follows classic Stephen King horror and coming of age, not a modern identity politics tract.
Audience facing progressive content stays light. Mike is black as in the novel, and Beverly and Stan match the source as the only girl and a Jewish kid. The group is mostly white small town kids, which fits the book and setting. There is almost no activist speech, no confirmed LGBTQ plot in this film, and no big identity driven redesign. Heavy adult failure and Beverly’s abuse land as horror and character trauma, not as a DEI thesis.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for It.
Woke representation / casting
Mike is black just as in King’s novel. Beverly is the only girl and Stan is Jewish, both from the source. The rest of the late 1980s Maine Losers are a white small-town kid group that fits the book and setting. This is not a quota redesign or a history swap.
8%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No modern activist, DEI, or identity-politics speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not Present. The main drive is friendship against personal fears. Beats about outcast kids, Beverly’s abuse at home, and isolation work as character trauma and coming of age. They do not form a structured identity or DEI thesis. There is no confirmed LGBTQ storyline in this chapter.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Neglectful and abusive adults and a rotten small-town adult world are strong. That fits classic King horror about the end of childhood. Domestic abuse plays as horror and character drama. It is not modern messaging about toxic masculinity, patriarchy, or colonial guilt.
10%
Woke character or canon changes
The film updates the era, cuts the novel’s underage sewer sex scene, deepens Beverly’s father’s sexual abuse, and uses less of the book’s racism plot. Those are adaptation and taste choices. They are not identity-driven race or gender swaps of established figures. Richie’s later queer framing belongs to Chapter Two, not this film.
5%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful sustained right or anti-woke campaign that this movie pushed DEI or a woke agenda.

Creator track record context
Cached context points to Muschietti as craft and horror focused. King reads as classical liberal rather than identity-first fiction. Other creators form a mild ensemble signal. That background does not dominate what is on screen in this title.
