John Mulaney stands alone on a large stage at Boston Symphony Hall. He tells the audience about the night his friends staged an intervention after his drug use spun out of control. He then describes detox, rehab, and the strange life he faced after his divorce and new public image. The tone is fast, dark, and full of jokes about his own mistakes, but it also becomes painfully honest.
The set follows Mulaney's fight with cocaine, prescription drugs, attention, fame, and shame. A short opening song jokes that young viewers like Bo Burnham because he is less problematic, and a later joke asks whether anyone can cancel Mulaney after he nearly destroyed himself. These lines use current cancel-culture language, but they do not steer the story toward an activist cause. The larger message is about addiction, recovery, and the cost of trying to stay likable.
