Just Getting Started follows Duke Diver, a smooth manager who runs the Villa Capri, a luxury senior resort in Palm Springs. Duke fills the place with golf, poker, drinks, Christmas parties, and romance. Leo McKay, a tough former military man, arrives and beats Duke at nearly everything while chasing the same woman. Duke then learns that his past as a mob lawyer has found him, so the rivals must work together against killers. The film uses broad jokes, old-fashioned flirting, and light action.
Suzie is a corporate manager who checks the resort’s books, but the film mainly uses her as the prize in the men’s rivalry. In one short exchange, she says their fight is “sexist and outrageous” and asks if they hear themselves. The film presents this gender comment as a quick joke tied to the rivalry. The story stays focused on aging, male pride, friendship, romance, and starting over after a hidden past.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Just Getting Started.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The modern Palm Springs setting includes black and white characters without making identity a topic. The movie gives no diversity-first casting message or repeated representation pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Suzie calls Duke and Leo’s fight over her “sexist and outrageous.” She asks if the men hear themselves, and the men joke about the difference between fighting over her and courting her. The exchange lasts only a short scene before the story returns to romance and action.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
The story makes Suzie a business manager who checks the resort’s books. The film then turns her into the prize in the men’s rivalry. The men later rescue her from danger. Suzie briefly challenges that treatment as sexist, but the idea stays inside one comic subplot.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Suzie labels the men’s contest over her “sexist and outrageous” and asks if they hear themselves. The exchange points at male entitlement for a moment. The story does not continue this critique through family, religion, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about Duke, Leo, and Suzie. It does not change a known character, source story, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction or boycott. Web reviews and the available audience review focused on weak comedy, pacing, and story problems instead of DEI or identity politics.

Creator track record context
Ron Shelton’s cached score is 25/100, with a record centered on sports, character stories, and relationships. Bill Gerber’s cached score is 37/100, with support for more diversity and strong female leads. The other listed producers have cached scores from 0 to 10/100 and no clear activist record. The film’s interviews focus on male competition, aging, and comedy rather than a diversity campaign.
