Killer Heat

Penelope’s story centers on escaping a controlling marriage and keeping her freedom. The film treats her plan to remove Elias as understandable, even though it is criminal, and Nick chooses not to expose her. Nick also learns that his jealousy and controlling behavior harmed his own wife. The theme is visible and important, but it stays inside a noir crime plot.

The film repeatedly shows men controlling women through jealousy, threats, and violence. Elias threatens Penelope when she tries to leave, and Nick admits that his own behavior pushed his wife away. Penelope’s murder plan is framed as a route to freedom, while Nick’s return to his family is treated as a step toward change. The story criticizes harmful relationships, but it does not attack a wider Western institution or promote a current political program.

One Italian audience review called the ending a double standard because Penelope helps cause the deaths of her husband and brother-in-law and the detective lets her go free. That comment was isolated and did not create a wider anti-woke campaign. The separate X check found no anti-woke reaction, boycott, or review-bombing.

Philippe Lacôte has emphasized Ivorian stories and African stories that get less attention. Matt Charman has supported more stories about people from diverse backgrounds. The stored notes show little or no identity-politics pattern for Jo Nesbø, Roberto Bentivegna, and the listed producers. This gives the title mild creator track record context, not a strong activist signal.
