An unnamed member of the last human species speaks to the first humans from about two billion years in the future. The sun is breaking apart, and the survivors know that their world cannot last. They send out seeds of new life and reach backward through time for help. The film moves through black and white images of empty monuments, with a slow, dark, and sometimes hopeful mood.
The story follows the rise and fall of human species instead of one person's daily life. It presents shared memory, a group mind, and a common duty as signs of human growth. It also treats old religions as worn-out systems and looks back at a failed dream of social unity. The main message is about extinction, the short life of civilizations, and the small but lasting value of human thought.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Last and First Men.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film shows no human actors as characters. Tilda Swinton only provides the narrator's voice, and the film does not frame her casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The narration discusses evolution, survival, religion, group minds, and the death of the sun. It does not push current identity, gender, DEI, or activist ideas.

Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows the rise and fall of human species across deep time. Its main themes are extinction, human purpose, shared memory, and hope rather than race, sex, sexuality, or identity politics.

Western institutional / cultural critique
The narration says future people replaced old religious rites and calls them debased. It presents shared minds and common purpose as higher than isolated individual life. These ideas question religion and individualism, but the film does not attack modern Western institutions or current conservative views.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film shortens a 1930 novel to its final chapters, but it does not visibly change a character's race, sex, sexuality, or leadership role. Tilda Swinton's voice presents the unnamed future narrator without a stated identity change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke or right-leaning complaints were found in the reviewed coverage. Public comments focused on the film's slow, abstract style.

Creator track record context
Jóhann Jóhannsson's profile is mainly artistic and humanist, with no strong record of DEI activism. Olaf Stapledon held pacifist, internationalist, socialist, and anti-apartheid views. Those views were broad and older than modern identity politics. The stored profiles for the producers and cinematographer show little activist work. This gives the title a mild left-leaning context, not a strong woke track record.
