Lou is a lonely woman who lives with her dog on a remote island in Washington State in 1986. She plans to end her life, but her neighbor Hannah arrives after Hannah's young daughter Vee is taken during a violent storm. Lou and Hannah follow the kidnapper through dark woods, broken bridges, and dangerous buildings. The chase reveals Lou's secret past, Hannah's abusive marriage, and the family link between the women and the kidnapper. The movie has a grim, violent, and fast-moving tone.
The movie puts two women at the center of a rescue mission, and both women fight back against armed men. Lou is an older action hero with expert combat skills, while Hannah grows from a frightened mother into an active fighter and protector. The story treats female strength, survival after abuse, and the choice between motherhood and a life of service as important themes. These ideas stay tied to the chase, family conflict, and personal secrets.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Lou.
Woke representation / casting
Two women lead the rescue and carry most of the action. Lou is an older woman who defeats trained male attackers, and Hannah grows from a frightened mother into an active fighter. The movie’s public framing also sells the pair as female action stars and emphasizes girl power. The focus is a clear representation choice, even though Lou’s CIA past explains her skills.
33%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film uses CIA history and war-crime details to explain the characters’ pasts. The dialogue does not argue for a current political cause or identity policy.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Lou and Hannah’s relationship drives the movie’s emotional story. Hannah escapes a violent husband and learns to act as a protector, while Lou moves from isolation toward care for the mother and child. The film repeatedly shows women resisting male violence and treats survival, female strength, and motherhood as important ideas. The message stays inside a personal rescue and revenge story.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The CIA appears as a secret and morally dirty institution. Lou’s past includes secret agency work, while Philip is wanted for war crimes from military operations. The agency sends a sniper to kill its former asset even when Hannah and Vee may be nearby. This critique matters to the plot, but it is not tied to current identity politics or a broad attack on Western culture.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original thriller with no established character or real historical event being changed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Audience posts mostly discuss Janney’s performance, plot logic, and the ending. No meaningful anti-woke complaint campaign or boycott is documented.
0%
Creator track record context
The cached context gives Anna Foerster a score of 15, Maggie Cohn 18, and Jack Stanley 14. Allison Janney has some women’s-rights and political activity, while Hannah Minghella has worked with women’s groups. The wider creator group has no strong shared record of identity-driven activism.
