Malevolent follows Angela and her brother Jackson, two Americans in 1986 Glasgow who run a fake service for people who think their homes are haunted. Jackson wants money to pay dangerous lenders, while Angela is tired of using her late mother's name and supposed powers to trick grieving families. A job at a former children's home brings them face to face with murdered girls, a cruel caretaker, and a real haunting. The film shifts from a slow ghost mystery to a harsh and bloody survival story.
Angela is the clear lead, but the film treats her visions as part of the horror story instead of a lesson about modern gender politics. She struggles with family grief, a possible mental illness, and pressure from her brother before learning to trust what she sees. The story also shows abused girls seeking revenge through ghosts and a mother whose violence grows from control and grief. Its main ideas concern guilt, fraud, mental health, family loss, and the danger of hiding the past.

Olaf de Fleur has a past interest in immigrant and transgender stories, which gives the title some representation-focused creator context. Eva Konstantopoulos is mainly known for horror writing. The other key creators have little public record of activist or identity-first work. Malevolent itself does not connect to the director's more identity-focused projects.
