Layla is a college adviser in New York who spends Christmas chasing a concert ticket. A year earlier, she met James in an airport and promised to see him at a Pentatonix Christmas Eve show if they were both single. After she finds her boyfriend cheating, she hires Teddy, a concierge, to help her find a ticket. The chase becomes a bright, silly romance as Layla slowly learns that the man she wants may have been beside her all along.
The clearest woke element is a long Snow Ball contest built around drag performers and lip syncing. Teddy and Layla enter the contest with help from Jordy, and the movie presents the drag scene as fun, skilled, and worth celebrating. Layla also works with students seeking places at historically Black colleges, and the lead couple, their friends, and much of the family are black. Those choices make identity and queer performance visible, but they stay inside a side story while the main plot remains a man and woman finding love through fate and loyalty.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Meet Me Next Christmas.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a black woman and a black man at the center of the romance. Layla’s friend, Teddy’s family, and several other major roles are also Black, while Layla helps students reach historically Black colleges. This makes identity visible across the main cast, but the modern New York setting can support this mix and the film does not turn casting into a speech. The producers were reported as wanting a Christmas rom-com with black people in it, which makes the representation signal moderate rather than dominant.
34%
Woke political dialogue
Layla tells James that the person for him may be “she or they,” which is an inclusive gender line. Jordy and the others also praise drag performers during the Snow Ball and mention RuPaul’s Drag Race. These lines appear in short exchanges around the contest. The movie does not build its romance around a political speech or repeated activist debate.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Jordy leads a long drag lip-sync contest that becomes the main way Layla and Teddy can win concert tickets. The movie treats the performers as talented, funny, and welcome, and it gives the contest a large set piece. Layla also uses inclusive wording when she speaks about a future partner. The main story remains a man and woman falling in love, so the identity material is a strong side thread rather than the whole premise.
46%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The movie does not attack men, family life, Christianity, capitalism, or Western institutions. Layla leaves a cheating boyfriend and chooses a kind partner, which is a normal romance plot.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original Christmas romance. Pentatonix members play versions of themselves, so no established fictional characters or historical figures are changed.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several Reddit users called the movie woke or objected to the drag scenes. Other comments said the contest took too much time and pushed LGBTQ ideas into a simple Christmas romance. Movieguide warned families about the long drag sequence and the film’s fate-based worldview. One German user review called the movie a re-education film and complained that white roles were mostly negative. The evidence is scattered across small audience discussions, with no major news controversy.

Creator track record context
Rusty Cundieff has a cached score of 48/100 because his past horror work has addressed racism, police brutality, and corrupt politicians. Matt Code and Jenny Lewis have mild diversity-related context, with cached scores of 23/100 and 28/100. Christina Milian has a modest gender and representation signal at 12/100. The writers and most other producers have little or no known activist record, so the overall context is mild to moderate.
