Midsommar

The story centers on Dani moving from a failing relationship into a female-led group that shares her grief and gives her public power. The film crowns her May Queen and lets her choose Christian for sacrifice after a drugged sex ritual. The ending gives her a twisted image of release, but it also shows that she has suffered a break from reality and been drawn into a murderous cult. The result is a strong female-empowerment theme, even though the film keeps that theme frightening and unclear.

The film shows Christian and his male friends as crude, selfish, sexually entitled, and careless toward Dani. The men also compete over academic work and treat the Hårga as material for their own goals. The female-led Hårga gives Dani shared emotion, group support, and the power to punish Christian. The film criticizes male behavior and broken relationships, but it does not attack a broad Western institution or offer a full political program.

A small anti-feminist Reddit discussion called the film misandrist and attacked its treatment of Christian’s drugged sex scene. The discussion also objected to the film being treated as a female-empowerment story and rejected the phrase “toxic masculinity.” Mainstream coverage focused on the ending, the breakup, and whether Christian’s fate was deserved. The evidence shows fringe complaints, not a large or sustained anti-woke campaign.

Aster’s stored creator context gives him 10/100 and describes his main work as horror about grief, family trauma, and fear. Midsommar does carry a specific female-empowerment signal through Dani’s arc and the Hårga’s female power. The stored scores for the listed producers, casting directors, and script supervisor are also low, from 5 to 11. No broad activist or identity-driven pattern is recorded for the key crew.
