Brent and Kendall Ryan live in a plain American suburb with their teenage daughter Carly and their young son Josh. Brent feels trapped in a boring job and misses the wild life he had when he was young, while Kendall regrets leaving her career to run the home. One day, strange static and an unexplained force make parents across the country want to kill only their own children. Carly and Josh hide in their house and try to survive as their parents become violent. The movie mixes bloody horror, sharp jokes, family anger, and a frantic style.
Mom and Dad treats parenthood as a job that can make adults feel used, old, and forgotten. It also makes fun of middle-class spending, old ideas about male toughness, and the pressure to live as a perfect family. The story includes a short race-related conflict when Brent attacks Carly’s Black boyfriend, but it does not make race or identity the main subject. Its main target is the anger inside a family, and the film uses extreme violence to turn that anger into dark comedy.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mom and Dad.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The Ryan family is a white suburban family, while a Chinese housekeeper and a black boyfriend appear in side roles. The film does not frame these choices as a diversity goal or make identity central to casting.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has a teacher talk about iPhones being made to be replaced, and another adult tells teens to go to church. The dialogue does not promote modern left-wing politics, DEI, or identity politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes parenthood and family roles the center of its social message. It shows Brent as a man trapped by old ideas about work, sex, toughness, and being the head of the home. It shows Kendall as a former career woman who gave up that life and feels lost as a housewife. The film also presents Brent’s attack on Carly’s Black boyfriend as racial fear, but that moment is brief beside the main family story.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Brent’s breadwinner role and Kendall’s move from journalism to housework as sources of regret. It treats old male toughness, family duty, and suburban success as pressures that can turn into anger. It also mocks consumer habits, generational pride, and the idea that a family must look happy. The story does not build a broad attack on religion, capitalism, or Western society, so this stays a mild score.
35%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about the Ryan family. It does not change a known character, source story, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke posts, campaign, or specific complaints. Wider reviews and audience posts focused on the strange premise, dark humor, violence, and Nicolas Cage.

Creator track record context
Brian Taylor’s supplied creator profile is mainly fast genre filmmaking and has no clear left-leaning activist record. Most listed producers have no public identity-politics or DEI record. Cassian Elwes has supported gender parity efforts, and Steve Ponce has worked on a social-issue film. These small links do not connect to the movie’s main message.
