Walt is a careless college barista in 2049 who dreams of Mars but lacks the grades and money to go. After one night with Ginny, he sneaks onto a shuttle because she has left for the new Mars colony. Sophie, a smart student with a fear of flying, takes the same trip to reach her longtime boyfriend and the family who raised her. Walt hides in her cabin, and their tense teamwork slowly turns into a light and very clear romance.
Sophie is much smarter and more useful than Walt, who is often called average and causes most of their problems. The future cast has a wide mix of races, a black woman captain, and a lesbian scientist and engineer couple whose proposal leads to a shipwide party. Sophie also stops building her life around Calvin and chooses her own work and future, while Walt gives up Mars to follow her home. The film repeats mild green themes and ends with jokes about a billionaire who avoids taxes and could have used his fortune to end hunger.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Moonshot.
Woke representation / casting
Sophie is a brilliant Asian woman who fixes ship systems and plans to help save Earth. Calvin is a black published scientist, and the ship has a black woman as captain. A lesbian scientist and engineer couple get a proposal and a party. The movie pairs this broad mix with Walt, a white man who is repeatedly called average and shown as less capable.
44%
Woke political dialogue
The movie says Earth is dying and makes Sophie’s waste-cutting plan a serious life goal. Several scenes speak about saving Earth and making Mars green. The billionaire Kovi jokes that he pays no taxes and admits that his money could have ended world hunger. These lines recur, but the movie does not discuss parties, elections, or named movements.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Sophie’s central arc turns a trip to follow her boyfriend into a choice about her own work and future. Walt finally follows her back to Earth instead. A lesbian couple’s engagement becomes a clear supporting plot with a proposal and a party. The movie makes female independence and queer inclusion easy to notice, but the main romance is still between Walt and Sophie.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Leon Kovi is a tax-avoiding billionaire who admits that he could have ended world hunger many times. His company plans to own Walt’s image and sell his story to the public and investors. Walt rejects that offer and leaves Mars. This critique shapes the ending, but it stays in one late part of the movie and does not reject capitalism as a whole.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Moonshot is an original story with no established characters or historical figures being changed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One unverified Google Play review called the movie “kind of woke.” The reviewer gave no example from the movie. Wider Reddit, audience-review, and entertainment coverage did not show a repeated anti-woke complaint.

Creator track record context
Producer Greg Berlanti has a strong record of making LGBTQ representation prominent. Producer Michael McGrath has backed queer and social-issue projects, and Sarah Schechter has overseen several inclusive shows. Director Christopher Winterbauer and writer Max Taxe have no documented activist or representation-first pattern. Most other producers and the casting director have low stored scores.
