Mothering Sunday follows Jane Fairchild, an orphan who works as a maid in rural England after the First World War. On a day off in 1924, Jane visits Paul Sheringham, the wealthy man she has secretly loved for years. Paul is engaged to Emma, and his family expects him to marry her and continue their old way of life. The film moves between Jane’s youth, her years as a writer, and her old age, so the mood stays quiet, sensual, and full of grief.
Jane’s rise from servant to famous writer makes female independence a main part of the story. The film gives her control over sex, love, work, and the secret that shapes her writing. It shows her later relationship with Donald, a Black Oxford philosopher, as an important part of her life. The story also questions class rules, marriage duty, and the power held by rich white families, but these ideas stay inside a sad romance about loss and memory.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mothering Sunday.
Woke representation / casting
Jane is a white maid in 1924 England, which fits the main setting. The film later gives a major supporting role to Sope Dirisu as Donald, a Black Oxford philosopher who becomes Jane’s partner. Their relationship is shown as a normal and loving part of her later life, while Donald is presented as highly educated and successful for the period. This is a clear identity-aware choice, but it is limited to the later subplot.
34%
Woke political dialogue
The film has a brief class and identity jab when Jane mocks the way rich white men dress. Donald also says that Jane’s years in service helped shape her as a writer. These lines point to class and gender power, but the film has no repeated political speeches or activist debate. The remarks remain a small part of the dialogue.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
Jane’s path from servant to famous writer is a central part of the movie. The story gives her control over sex, love, work, and the secret that shapes her art. It treats her nudity and desire as signs of freedom and presents her as a strong woman rather than a helpless victim. Her later relationship with Donald adds a visible relationship between a black man and a white woman. These ideas recur across the timelines, though the movie remains mainly a quiet romance about grief and memory.
52%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows servants taking orders from wealthy families and treats that social order as limiting. Jane mocks rich white men, and the story contrasts her freedom with Paul’s duty to marry within his class. The movie also questions the idea that a woman’s life should be shaped by service, marriage, and children. These points are repeated, but the film does not make a broad modern attack on Western institutions or religion.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
The novel gives Donald only a small role. The film expands him into a larger later-life partner for Jane and visibly casts him as a Black Oxford philosopher. The film’s production notes say his race was important and connect him with the unusual success of a black student in that period. This is an identity-aware change to the source, but it affects a later subplot rather than Jane’s main 1924 story.

Creator track record context
Eva Husson has a strong gender-equality record and made Girls of the Sun about female Kurdish fighters. Alice Birch has written feminist plays about patriarchy and unfair treatment of women. Stephen Woolley has backed films with gender and queer themes, while Elizabeth Karlsen often supports stories about women’s history. This record fits the film’s focus on female freedom and gives the creator context a strong score.
