C is a quiet musician who lives with M in a small Texas house. M wants them to move, but C cannot let go of the home and its memories. C agrees to leave, then dies in a car crash and returns under a white sheet. He watches M grieve, leave, and build a new life while he stays trapped in the house. The film feels slow, sad, strange, and dreamlike.
The film briefly includes Clara and her wife, a same-sex couple, among the later people linked to the house. A party exchange questions what women should do, and a longer speech asks whether art, family, money, religion, and human progress can give life lasting meaning. C does not leave and silently watches M, which can support a small toxic masculinity reading because the story shows his possessive attachment as unhealthy. These ideas stay secondary to grief, memory, love, and the passing of time. The main story follows a man’s struggle to let go of a home, a relationship, and his need to be remembered.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Ghost Story.
Woke representation / casting
The film includes Clara and her wife as a brief same-sex couple in a later house scene. This element is audience-visible but does not control the story or the main couple’s casting. The main pair are a man and a woman, and the film does not frame its cast as a diversity statement.
15%
Woke political dialogue
One party exchange includes a woman saying that a man may not think women should do something. The exchange briefly raises a gender expectation about what women should do. The film then moves into a longer speech about death, art, God, and the end of the universe, so the gender point does not become a larger political message.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
The film includes Clara and her wife as a brief same-sex couple, which adds a clear LGBTQ+ element. The film also shows C refusing M’s wish to leave and silently watching her after death, which can support a small toxic masculinity reading about possessiveness and secret watching. Those ideas stay in the background, while grief, memory, love, and time drive the story.
20%
Western institutional / cultural critique
C’s refusal to leave and his silent watching turn a private relationship problem into a mild critique of male control and secret watching. M asks why she is the only one making decisions, and the film treats C’s attachment as unhealthy. The party speech questions money and being remembered, but the film does not build a broad attack on family, religion, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story with no source material or established characters altered for ideological reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public conversation contained no notable right-leaning complaints about woke messaging, identity politics, or agenda-driven content.
0%
Creator track record context
Lowery said the film grew partly from fear about the political situation in the United States and the future of mankind. That remark gives a small political context signal, but he did not frame the film around identity, DEI, or social justice. The supplied profiles for the producers and casting directors show no activist or identity-focused record.
