Toula Portokalos takes her husband Ian, their daughter Paris, and much of her loud Greek American family to a small village in Greece after her father Gus dies. She carries Gus's journal and tries to deliver it to his three childhood friends, but the village is nearly empty and the planned reunion is mostly a trick by Mayor Victory to bring people home. Paris hides that she failed her first year at college, while Toula also learns that Gus had a son he never knew. The film mixes family jokes, romance, grief, Greek customs, and bright holiday scenery in a gentle but uneven comedy.
The story gives a supporting role to a nonbinary mayor who is welcomed by the family and who moves between the men's and women's dance lines. It also follows Qamar, a Syrian refugee, as she marries Christos after older relatives worry about the match. The movie connects their acceptance to Gus's own move from Greece to America and to the family's belief that love can cross borders. These ideas are clear in side plots, but they do not replace the main story about grief, family roots, and growing up. The strongest message is that families can change while still keeping their traditions.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
Woke representation / casting
The movie mainly casts Greek or Greek-diaspora actors as the Portokalos family, which matches the story. The movie also places a nonbinary mayor at the center of the Greek village and gives a Syrian refugee a wedding with a Greek man. Those two visible identity choices stand out in the smaller village setting. The roles are important in side plots, but they are not the main roles of the family.
32%
Woke political dialogue
The film has direct dialogue about xenophobia when a Greek relative calls Qamar a Syrian orphan and another character says the family is not xenophobic. The family compares Qamar's move to America with Gus's move and mentions helping Ukrainians in the town. Aunt Voula also asks Victory about boy clothes, girl clothes, and clothes that are neither. These points appear in a few scenes and support acceptance, but the movie stays a family comedy rather than a political debate.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Qamar's story centers on a Syrian refugee who secretly plans to marry Christos, a Greek man. Older relatives resist the match, but they accept it and join the wedding. Victory's nonbinary identity is treated as normal, and the family welcomes them as mayor and cousin. These identity themes return across the trip and end in acceptance, but they stay below the main family and grief story.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film briefly challenges xenophobia when family members defend a Syrian refugee marrying a Greek man. The film also shows Victory moving between men's and women's dance lines, which pushes against old gender rules. The movie does not make a wider attack on Western institutions, religion, capitalism, or traditional family life.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
The film adds Victory, a nonbinary cousin, to the Portokalos family and makes them the mayor of Gus's village. That addition brings a new identity element into the series' family canon. The film does not change the race, sex, or sexuality of any returning character, and it does not rewrite an older story. The canon addition is brief, so this factor stays low.
17%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small X accounts complained about the nonbinary mayor, the Syrian refugee marriage, and what they described as migrant housing and Ukraine fundraising beats. Some posts called the film a Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson “woke nightmare” and said people should skip it or that they walked out. A few later posts repeated the same complaint with little engagement. The available search found no large boycott, review-bomb drive, or sustained right-wing campaign, so this backlash was fringe.
14%
Creator track record context
Nia Vardalos has a cached score of 13/100 and is described as drawing from Greek family life without a strong activist record. Tom Hanks has a cached score of 17/100 for mild liberal politics, while Rita Wilson and the other producers have low cached scores. The script supervisor also has a low cached score and no known activist profile. The creator track record context is therefore mild.
