Muriel marries Lee after the Korean War and moves from Kansas to a new home in 1950s San Diego. She hides a growing love of horse betting and starts an affair with her neighbor Sandra. Lee's restless brother Julius goes to Las Vegas, where he falls for a Mexican casino worker named Henry and joins risky card schemes. The film moves slowly between these two secret lives and treats romance, danger, and loss with a sad but hopeful tone.
Queer love and self-acceptance drive both main stories, so they are not side details. Muriel leaves the safe life her husband planned and learns that her desire for women is real. Julius faces violence and must hide his love for Henry, while gay bars and private parties show a larger hidden group. The film presents the 1950s ideal of marriage, family, and steady work as a poor fit for Muriel and Julius, though Lee remains kind and caring.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for On Swift Horses.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives both lead stories same-sex romances. Latino actors play both of their love interests, and the film also shows gay bars, a lesbian party, and several queer side characters. Queer identity is clear in four of the five young main roles. The cast pattern makes LGBTQ representation visible across most of the movie.
82%
Woke political dialogue
Characters speak about hiding same-sex desire and the danger of being found. Sandra tells Muriel that their affair is real, and another woman says people like them could lose everything at any time. Lee speaks in coded terms about Julius because being gay is unsafe. The film avoids party politics, modern slogans, and long activist speeches.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
Both main plots are built around queer identity and same-sex love. Muriel discovers her attraction to women and leaves her marriage after an affair with Sandra. Julius falls deeply in love with Henry and searches for him after they are forced apart. Gay bars, secret parties, hiding, police danger, and self-acceptance shape the whole story.
94%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows the 1950s model of marriage, family, and steady work as a cage for Muriel and Julius. Muriel gains freedom through hidden money and her affair with Sandra. Julius rejects Lee's safe family plan and faces violence for being gay. Police raids and public shame show the wider culture punishing queer people. Lee stays loving and decent, but the story favors breaking social rules to live truthfully.
65%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The same-sex relationships come from the novel. The film's main changes are story cuts and a new ending scene.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A conservative Christian review attacks the film for treating straight family life as a prison and making same-sex affairs seem romantic. A few screening walkouts show dislike of the gay story, but those viewers gave no clear political complaint. No broad claim that the movie pushes woke or DEI ideas was found.

Creator track record context
Director Daniel Minahan has a strong record of queer stories, including Fellow Travelers. Novelist Shannon Pufahl often centers lesbian identity and queer history, while writer Bryce Kass has a milder record. Producers Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler, Peter Spears, Jenifer Westphal, and Joe Plummer often back queer stories or groups that get less screen time. Many other producers have low or mild records, so the group is mixed.
