The film follows Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a young lawyer and mother in 1950s and 1970s America. She studies at Harvard, teaches law, and struggles to find a law firm that will hire her because she is a woman. With help from her husband Marty, she takes a tax case involving a man who is denied a caregiver benefit. The warm courtroom drama shows her turning a narrow case into a step toward changing sex discrimination law.
The film makes gender equality the center of its story. Ruth repeatedly says that laws should not force men and women into fixed jobs or family roles. The movie presents her as the smartest person in many rooms, while Marty cooks, supports her work, and helps her reach court. Ruth’s daughter Jane adds a younger protest-minded view, and the final speech celebrates a country changing its old rules. These messages are frequent and drive the main conflict.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for On the Basis of Sex.
Woke representation / casting
Felicity Jones is a British actor playing the Jewish, Brooklyn-born Ruth Bader Ginsburg. That gives the lead a visible mismatch with the real person’s background. The film does not build a diverse ensemble or present the casting as a wider identity message, so the signal stays weak.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Ruth repeatedly argues that laws should not force men and women into fixed roles. She calls sex discrimination a legal problem and says people should choose work and family roles by interest. Her students, lawyers, and judges debate whether old gender rules protect families. These ideas fill the legal case and the final courtroom speech.
68%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes gender equality the main story. Ruth is repeatedly shown as the smartest person in rooms controlled by men. Marty mainly acts as her helper, cook, and supporter. Jane adds a younger activist view of women’s rights. The story treats breaking old gender roles as the path to justice.
72%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows Harvard, law firms, and courts using old gender rules to block women. Male bosses tell Ruth to smile, control her emotions, or stay home, while government lawyers warn that equality could harm the family. The story presents those institutions and traditional roles as wrong and in need of change. The critique stays inside a historical legal fight and does not attack Christianity or capitalism.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
The film invents Ruth stumbling at the start of her first courtroom argument. It also invents most of her final speech about fixed gender roles and the country’s right to change. These additions strengthen the film’s gender-equality message. The basic case and Ruth’s legal goal remain tied to real history.
20%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small right-leaning outlets criticized the film as a glowing tribute to a liberal icon. PJ Media and Blaze attacked a trailer line about the Constitution and framed the film as progressive hero worship. A separate X pass found only a few small or anonymous posts calling it left-wing propaganda. No large boycott or review-bombing campaign appeared.
18%
Creator track record context
Writer Daniel Stiepleman has a recurring focus on sex equality and other underrepresented people. Director Mimi Leder has publicly embraced feminist identity and directed this gender-equality story. Producer Jeff Skoll’s Participant Media has a strong record of cause-driven films about rights and inequality. Other listed crew have little public activist history.
