Val is a sad, stuck factory worker who wants to end his life. His best friend Kevin just tried the same thing and is in a psych hospital. Val breaks Kevin out, and they agree to kill each other after one last day. They settle old scores, face bad people from their past, and ride dirt bikes. The tone is dark, raw, and sometimes funny in a grim way.
The story is mainly about depression, trauma, and a hard friendship, not a social-justice lecture. Viewers will see a black man and a white man as the leads, rough talk about race between friends, and light jokes about guns and hard jobs. Race and class sit in the background of their lives. The big focus is suicide, abuse, and whether life is still worth it. Normal viewers will notice some race and class edge, but not a loud woke campaign about identity or diversity.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for On the Count of Three.
Woke representation / casting
Black lead Val and white best friend Kevin are front and center. Black supporting players include Haddish and Smoove. Casting fits Carmichael starring in his own debut and a modern friend story. Not a girlboss or “quota power role” pattern. Diversity is visible but story-led, not a representation lecture.
22%
Woke political dialogue
There are light jabs about guns and tough jobs, and race comes up in a harsh slur moment between friends. Reviews also note brief race and class notes. Talk stays short and character-driven, not long activist speeches.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arc is suicide, trauma, abuse, and friendship. Race and class color their hard lives but do not drive a modern identity-politics message. Not a queer, gender, or DEI-first story.
26%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Failed care (abusive doctor), dead-end work, and easy guns shape the mood. Feels like bleak underclass America more than a loud attack on “the West,” church, or traditional family as systems. Individual villains matter more than big ideology.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear anti-woke or right-leaning campaign treating this film as woke/DEI propaganda was found. Debate was about suicide and tone.
0%
Creator track record context
Director-star Carmichael brings a strong race-and-queer public track record. Writers sit mid-30s for progressive, identity-aware projects. Most producers are low. Overall context is moderate because Carmichael leads the film, even though the plot itself is not his queer-identity work.
