Plainclothes follows Lucas Brennan, a young police officer in Syracuse, New York, in 1997. His unit sends him undercover to lure gay men into exposing themselves in mall bathrooms so they can be arrested. Lucas feels drawn to Andrew, one of his targets, and his job becomes tied to a secret romance and a painful search for the truth about himself. A recent loss, pressure from his family, and fear of being exposed make the film tense, sad, and intimate.
The movie is strongly identity-driven because gay male identity, same-sex desire, and life in the closet shape nearly every major choice and turn. Lucas’s romance with Andrew is not a side plot because it changes his work, his family life, and his sense of self. The story presents police entrapment, family pressure, and old ideas about manhood as forces that make queer people hide. The story treats queer visibility and self-acceptance as positive while it portrays police and family pressure as harmful.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Plainclothes.
Woke representation / casting
Lucas and Andrew are both men in the film’s central romance, so queer identity is visible in the two main roles. Russell Tovey, an openly gay actor, plays Andrew, and Emmi said he wrote the part with Tovey in mind after seeing Looking. Interviews and promotion present the casting as part of queer visibility. The roles fit the story and period, and the film does not add a race or gender mismatch.
70%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Lucas and Andrew talk about arrests, fear, secrecy, sex, and family pressure. The film does not use modern activist speeches, DEI language, or current party politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Lucas is a closeted gay police officer whose work forces him to trap men like himself. His romance with Andrew drives the plot, his choices, and his fear of being exposed. The film returns to secrecy, shame, same-sex desire, coming out, and self-acceptance from start to finish. The story treats queer identity as the key to its conflict and resolution.
95%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The police unit treats gay men as people to trap and uses cameras, arrests, and tough-guy rules to control them. Lucas’s family pressures him to act straight and hides the harm caused by those rules. Andrew’s church life becomes part of the conflict when his private relationship is exposed. The 1997 setting keeps the critique tied to a period story, but interviews also present it as a warning about current policing of queer people.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original characters and does not change established canon or a real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke complaints, boycott calls, or review-bombing were found in the researched coverage. The separate X research pass found no specific anti-woke complaints.

Creator track record context
Carmen Emmi is a queer writer-director who has spoken about coming out and stories about hidden identity. Several producers have queer or representation-focused work in their public profiles. The casting group includes a company with public diversity and inclusion commitments. Other listed creators have little public activist record, so the context shows a strong queer industry connection but not a uniform activist record.
