Julia is a young woman whose boyfriend, Holt, becomes part of a dangerous group that studies a cursed video. The video kills its viewer seven days after it is watched, so Julia watches it herself to protect him. The pair follow clues from a college campus to Sacrament Valley, where they search for Samara’s buried remains. The movie uses supernatural horror, dark rooms, strange visions, insects, and a race against time to create a grim but familiar tone.
Julia’s courage and loyalty drive the action, and her choices come from fear of losing Holt and guilt after a death in her family. The movie follows Samara’s pain, anger, and need to be understood, but it keeps those ideas inside a ghost story. The main themes are fear, grief, love, and the danger of sharing media without control. The final curse enters Julia and spreads her copy of the video to her contacts, giving the old story a modern technology twist.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Rings.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Julia is the lead because the story follows her attempt to save Holt. The film does not frame her role as a diversity or empowerment message, and the main cast does not show a clear representation-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about a curse, research, grief, and survival. The film has no recurring speeches about current politics, activism, or social policy.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Julia’s bond with Holt and Samara’s family history drive the emotional story. The film does not make race, sex, queer identity, or group rights a central theme.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Gabriel’s student experiment is dangerous, and Burke hides information, but the story treats these acts as personal wrongdoing. The film does not attack modern Western institutions, men, family life, religion, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adds digital video tools and new details about Samara’s past. Those are franchise story changes, not identity-driven changes to established characters or real events.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X search found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. News and audience discussion focused on weak scares, dark visuals, delays, and repeated plot ideas rather than DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Chris Bender has spoken about using stories for social impact and social justice. His career still lacks a dominant identity or DEI focus, and he is one producer on a large studio horror sequel. The director and main writers have no clear record of identity-politics advocacy in the available context. The wider team therefore gives only a mild creator track record signal.
