German Chancellor Hilda Ortmann hosts the leaders of the Group of Seven at a country estate in Germany. The leaders must write a short statement about an unnamed world crisis, but they keep getting distracted by sex, pride, and small arguments. When the staff vanish, fog fills the woods and the leaders face ancient bog bodies, a giant brain, and other strange threats. The movie mixes dry political comedy with horror, crude sex jokes, and dreamlike nonsense.
The movie gives several major leadership roles to women, including Hilda, the British prime minister, and the European Commission president. It makes the women’s public image and supposed weakness a running joke, while the Canadian male leader acts needy, lustful, and childish. A scene about whether a giant brain belongs to a woman mocks the idea that women are less intelligent. These ideas are visible across the story, but the movie also mocks every leader and does not turn its gender jokes into a clear political lesson.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Rumours.
Woke representation / casting
The film gives top jobs to three women, including Germany’s chancellor, Britain’s prime minister, and the European Commission president. Nikki Amuka-Bird plays the British leader as a black woman, making identity visible in a major office. The other national roles form a broad international group that fits the G7 setting. The female leadership pattern is noticeable, but the movie does not present the cast as a diversity campaign.
36%
Woke political dialogue
The summit talks repeatedly use language about an equitable world, universal human rights, women, minorities, domestic violence, and a global crisis. The leaders also repeat ideas about climate, finance, and international cooperation. A Canadian leader gives a comic apology about ancestral land and sacred energies. The final speech repeats this language while praising kings and queens and a shared world purpose, so the ideas are heard often even though the film mocks empty words.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes gender roles part of its running story. Three women hold major leadership posts, while the Canadian male leader is sexual, needy, and childish. The men also treat a giant brain as female because they assume a woman’s brain would be smaller, and the joke targets that belief. The film returns to female leadership and male weakness, but its wider target is every leader’s foolishness.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie repeatedly shows G7 leaders as wealthy Western officials who hide behind empty statements. It makes their pageantry and slow response to crisis look foolish. One comic speech uses land, sacred, women, minority, and human-rights language, but the story mocks every side and does not give a detailed attack on one institution. The critique is broad political satire, not a strong activist case against capitalism, conservatism, or one faith.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses invented G7 counterparts rather than established fictional characters or named real figures. No identity change to source material drives the story.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit commenter called it a film that woke pseudo-intellectuals pretend to love. Other Reddit and Letterboxd comments mainly complained that the movie was strange, thin, or hard to follow. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction, so the anti-woke evidence is limited to one fringe comment.

Creator track record context
Guy Maddin has a cached score of 38/100 and a record of gender and power themes without a strong DEI persona. Evan and Galen Johnson have cached scores of 12/100 and 10/100 and are mainly known for experimental film work. Cate Blanchett and Avy Kaufman add moderate inclusion-related context, while most producers have low cached scores. The combined record gives mild to moderate context, not a strong activist profile.
