Tommy Walcott is a lonely man in his late thirties who lives with his mother after a breakup and a dull work life. Andy Samberg offers him one million dollars to join a dark web game where hunters try to kill him for 30 days. Tommy learns that the hunters cannot attack when he is with someone else, but his family and friends do not believe him. The film mixes nervous jokes, danger, paranoia, and a search for friendship.
The story treats friendship and family contact as better answers than isolation and the cash prize. Tommy must learn to trust Walter, Maddy, and the people around him. Maddy gives the story a small romantic thread, while Tommy’s family shows how far he has pulled away from normal life. The film keeps the conflict personal and centers on trust, family, and human contact.

These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Self Reliance.

Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about the game, money, fear, work, family, and loneliness. They do not give activist speeches or argue about current politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows a lonely man who rebuilds friendships after a breakup. Its message concerns connection and purpose, not race, gender, sexuality, or identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story makes the dark web game and its hunters look cruel and strange. It does not turn that plot into a modern activist attack on family, faith, men, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story with no established characters, canon, or historical figures being changed.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints

Creator track record context
Jake Johnson has a cached 41/100 score because he supported the It’s On Us campaign and female-forward creative spaces. Ali Bell has a cached 40/100 score from producing the all-female Ghostbusters reboot and PEN15. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Joe Hardesty, and Wendy O’Brien have cached scores from 9 to 15. The film’s own interviews center on loneliness, connection, friendship, and comedy, so the creator history gives only a limited title signal.
