Ellen Ashland is a skilled violinist who loses her sight after a brutal chemical attack in a parking lot. She leaves the hospital and moves into an apartment that was chosen to help her recover, but she does not remember how she got there. Clayton, a nurse hired by her brother, teaches her how to live with blindness, while Ellen hears a woman calling for help through a vent. Ellen soon suspects that Clayton and the people around her are hiding the truth. The film uses locked rooms, strange sounds, false images, and sudden attacks to create a tense and uneasy thriller.
The story gives Ellen a strong survivor arc as she learns to trust her own senses and fight back. Clayton uses his role as a caregiver to control her, and the film treats that control as the main danger rather than as a problem with a whole institution. Lana, another trapped woman, helps Ellen find a way out and gives the story a small women-helping-women thread. The film also shows Ellen returning to the stage six months later, which presents recovery as a return to her own life. These ideas support female resilience, but they stay inside a personal thriller about abuse, fear, and escape rather than a wider political message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Sightless.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a female lead and a mixed supporting cast in a modern American setting. It does not present those choices as a diversity goal, and identity does not shape the casting story.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film does not include lines about DEI, race, sexuality, gender politics, or activist causes. Its spoken conflict centers on blindness, fear, control, and escape.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers on a woman who rebuilds her independence after a violent attack leaves her blind. Ellen is controlled and doubted by a male caregiver, while Lana helps her escape an abusive home. Ellen’s return to the stage supports a mild female-resilience message. The story keeps that message inside a personal thriller and does not turn it into a wider identity campaign.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Clayton using a caregiver role to control and isolate Ellen. It also shows Russo threatening his wife, so male control over women appears in more than one plot thread. These choices give the thriller a mild toxic-masculinity and anti-abuse frame. The story does not blame a wider Western institution, religion, family system, or political group.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie expands Cooper Karl’s own short film and does not change a known franchise character, historical figure, or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints or boycott talk. Other audience and critic comments focus on the twist, pacing, blindness, and ending.
0%
Creator track record context
Cooper Karl has no clear activist or identity-driven record, and his work centers on psychological thrillers. Most producers have low cached scores and commercial genre backgrounds. A few producers have worked on queer or diversity-focused projects, but no evidence links those past credits to Sightless. The overall creator context is weak.
