Peter is a Los Angeles social media manager who has just learned that his boyfriend is married. He brings his best friend Nick to his family’s home in small-town New Hampshire and asks him to pretend to be his boyfriend. Peter’s mother then sets him up with James, a kind local trainer, while the family starts trying to match Peter with Nick. The movie uses a warm, silly Christmas-comedy tone with family jokes, a holiday play, dating trouble, and a happy romance.
The film puts a gay romance at the center of a familiar holiday story. Peter and Nick move from close friends to a couple, and the film treats their relationship as normal instead of making them face rejection or a coming-out crisis. Peter’s family accepts his sexuality and mainly worries that he is single, while the script adds jokes about Grindr, gay friends, and straight people’s assumptions. The interracial central couple, three gay male leads, and repeated queer-focused humor make identity a major part of the movie even though the plot stays light and formulaic.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Single All the Way.
Woke representation / casting
The film places three gay men at the center of the romance, with Peter, Nick, and James driving the main love story. Peter and Nick form an interracial couple, while Peter’s family is mostly white and supportive. Netflix and the cast presented the movie as a first gay Christmas rom-com and a representation milestone. The wider family group is largely white, so the identity focus is strongest in the lead roles.
74%
Woke political dialogue
The characters use repeated identity jokes such as “Insta-gays,” “guncle,” “FOMO-sexual,” and Grindr. Peter’s family talks about a book called “Loving Your LGBTTT Child” and jokes about straight people’s assumptions about gay friends. These lines make queer identity part of the movie’s everyday humor. The film does not stop for a political speech or a direct activist message.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Peter and Nick’s same-sex romance is the central story, not a side plot. The film presents a gay relationship as a normal Christmas love story and makes family acceptance part of the happy ending. Peter’s family does not demand a coming-out scene or treat his sexuality as a problem. The interracial couple and the focus on queer friendship add more identity-focused content. These themes shape the whole movie.
90%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film pushes back on the old idea that holiday romances must be about a man and a woman. Peter’s family treats his gay relationships as normal, and the movie jokes about straight people’s assumptions about gay friends. The family pressure is aimed at Peter’s single status, not his sexuality. The film does not attack Christianity, men, marriage, family life, or Western institutions, so this is a mild cultural-critique signal.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original Christmas romance, so it does not change established characters, canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The available coverage and audience comments criticize the formula, chemistry, and humor, not woke or DEI messaging. The separate X pass found no anti-woke complaints, and its fan jokes about a “gay agenda” were not clear political attacks.
0%
Creator track record context
Michael Mayer has a mixed record, with identity-focused work such as Spring Awakening and Out in the Dark alongside mainstream projects. Chad Hodge is openly gay and has a stronger LGBTQ-focused record. Joel S. Rice has a mild company-level focus on diverse storytelling, while the three casting directors have no strong public activist record. The combined creator context is moderate and supports the film’s clear queer focus.
