Spree follows Kurt Kunkle, a lonely young man in Southern California who wants online fame more than he wants a normal life. He drives for a rideshare app and fills his car with cameras, poison, and plans for a live show. Kurt calls the killings “The Lesson,” but his small audience keeps asking for bigger and more shocking acts. The movie uses phone screens, dash cameras, comments, and fast music to create a dark and frantic horror comedy.
The film has clear woke political dialogue about racism, white men, blackface, gender-queer language, and the way men treat women. Kurt answers a white supremacist passenger with anti-racist lines, while Jessie speaks about daily male harassment and identity pressure. Jessie is a black female comedian who becomes the main survivor and defeats Kurt, while the story treats his incel anger and male entitlement as part of the danger. These points matter, but the main target is social media fame, online attention, and the way the internet rewards violence.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Spree.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts Sasheer Zamata’s black female comedian at the center of the final conflict. Jessie survives Kurt’s attack, defeats him, and becomes the public face of the ending. The modern Los Angeles setting makes this casting plausible, and the movie does not present it as a diversity campaign. The rest of the cast is mixed but does not form a clear one-of-each group.
15%
Woke political dialogue
The film includes repeated lines about racism, blackface, white male behavior, gender-queer language, and the way men treat women. Kurt rejects a passenger’s racist talk and calls racism toxic, while Jessie says women are expected to smile and mocks white guys. Jessie also compares a sleazy man to a date-rape drug and describes the pressure of being watched and judged. These lines appear across several scenes, although most dialogue still concerns fame and attention.

Identity-driven story themes
The movie centers on a lonely white male incel who turns envy and online anger into a murder show. Kurt becomes obsessed with Jessie after seeing that she has the audience he wants, and he treats her success as something he deserves. Jessie calls out male harassment and later becomes the survivor who kills him and gains the fame he wanted. The film links white male violence, misogyny, and online attention, although social media remains the main target.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly mocks white male entitlement, racist online talk, and men who pressure women to perform happiness. Jessie calls out a man who demands that she smile and describes him as a date-rape drug in human form. Kurt’s envy of a successful woman helps drive the last part of the story. The movie does not attack Christianity or Western institutions, and its main criticism is aimed at online fame.
31%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original fictional characters and does not change established characters, source material, or real historical figures.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Elijah Schaffer said the movie quickly treats conservatives as racists and people who like America as bad people. He also called it full of SJW references and said it had no real story. Karlyn Borysenko sent viewers to Cobra Kai as an anti-woke alternative, while a Reddit complaint objected to the film’s “white men are bad” message. The posts had some reach, but they did not form a large campaign.
49%
Creator track record context
Kotlyarenko has a low-to-moderate creator record, with repeated interest in online identity, gender, politics, and the attention economy. McHugh has no known activist record. Most producers have low scores, but Future Nur and Alex Hughes have backed race, queer, and climate-focused work. The film’s white-male-mass-murder and social-media framing gives this context some weight, but the team does not show a strong representation-first pattern.
