Stuber follows Stu Prasad, a polite sporting-goods worker who drives for Uber to save money for a spin business. After laser eye surgery leaves Los Angeles detective Vic Manning nearly blind, Vic hires Stu to chase Oka Tedjo, the drug dealer who killed Vic’s partner. The two men race through Los Angeles, a strip club, a drug house, a vet clinic, and a police ambush while Vic tries to solve the case. The tone is a loud, crude, violent buddy comedy built around their sharp mismatch.
The film makes the men’s different ideas of manhood part of the main story. Vic treats anger, toughness, and self-reliance as proof of strength, while Stu values feelings, care, and asking for help. Their fights repeatedly push Vic to face his neglect of his daughter and push Stu to stop hiding behind politeness and fear. The film also makes diversity visible through two nonwhite male leads and a mixed Los Angeles group, but identity is not the main subject of the plot.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Stuber.
Woke representation / casting
The film places two nonwhite men at the center of a studio buddy-cop movie. The supporting cast includes a Cuban American daughter, an Indonesian villain, a woman police captain, and a woman police partner. The Los Angeles setting makes a mixed cast believable, and the movie does not make race the plot. Press interviews still call the two nonwhite leads a breakthrough, so the casting has a visible representation signal.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Stu and Vic repeatedly talk about what a man should be. Stu says asking for help is not weakness, and the film mocks the old rule that men should stay hard and silent. The film also uses a brief “Oscars-so-white” joke and a race-guessing exchange. These lines are woven into the banter, but they do not become a long political speech.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes changing male behavior part of the main character arc. Vic must face his anger, emotional distance, and neglect of his daughter. Stu must stop hiding behind fear and people-pleasing while still keeping his gentler side. The two men are told to meet in the middle, so the message is recurring and important even though the movie stays a crude action comedy.
52%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film treats old-style male toughness as a cause of harm. Vic’s father sends him into the desert as a test, and Vic repeats that hard lesson with his anger and distance from Nicole. The film treats the boss’s crude jokes about Stu’s masculinity as part of the problem while still using them for laughs. The dirty-cop twist and drug chase are crime plot points, not social arguments.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Stuber is an original buddy-cop story. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Breitbart called the film a woke comedy and blamed its weak opening on a lecture about toxic masculinity. The Federalist attacked the same theme and the male-strip-club jokes as a sign of Hollywood hypocrisy. A separate X search found only a few small accounts repeating similar claims or calling Stuber a woke nightmare. No large boycott, review-bombing drive, or sustained campaign was found, so the backlash was limited.
18%
Creator track record context
The key crew mainly work in mainstream comedy and action. The key crew have no strong public record of activist or identity-driven work. Nicole Abellera Hallman has discussed inclusive casting, but the title’s social message comes more from its masculinity plot than from a broad creator campaign.
