Jamie Winkle is a 16-year-old girl spending the summer of 2003 with her family in Cincinnati. Her grandmother is dying, but she uses her last days to reveal cruel and embarrassing secrets. Jamie then chases a romance with Luke, a boy training to become a priest, while her family falls apart around her. The movie mixes sharp jokes, sex talk, family drama, and a loose coming-of-age mood.
The strongest audience-visible identity themes come from Jamie’s sexual self-discovery and the film’s support for personal choice. Jamie treats female desire as something a girl can explore without shame, and the story presents this as part of growing up. The family also rejects Dotty’s claim that young Dylan might be gay and should be sent away to be changed. The film attacks religious prejudice through Dotty’s secret baptism, her belief that Jews go to Hell, and the comic priest romance, but these ideas stay inside a messy family comedy instead of becoming a wider political story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Summer '03.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main family is white, and the Jewish and Catholic details are part of Jamie’s backstory. The cast does not show a clear diversity-first pattern in prominent roles.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Jamie says that her grandmother’s dislike of her Jewish mother is shocking for 2003. The family rejects Dotty’s idea that Dylan should be changed for possibly being gay. These lines are tied to the family crisis and appear in a few scenes. The film does not give a long modern political speech.
26%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie centers on Jamie learning about sex and making her own choices. The story treats female desire as a valid part of growing up and lets Jamie finish the summer without rejecting herself. The story also supports Dylan after Dotty suggests conversion therapy and presents her ideas as harmful. These themes shape the main arc, but the movie remains a small family comedy rather than a full activist drama.
60%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Dotty secretly baptizes Jamie and says that Jews go to Hell. The story connects church rules about sex with shame and control through Luke’s priest training and his romance with Jamie. The family treats Dotty’s anti-gay and anti-Semitic beliefs as cruel, and Jamie keeps her view of religion open. The critique is visible across the family plot, but it does not attack capitalism or Western society as a whole.
44%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story, not an adaptation or a retelling of real events. It makes no identity change to an established character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One review called the movie strongly anti-Catholic and objected to its female-centered sex-comedy approach and empowerment framing. The review directly attacked the film’s religious and gender message. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke posts, and no wider boycott or news campaign appeared. The evidence is limited to one sharp review, so the score is low.

Creator track record context
The cached record gives Becca Gleason 0/100 and the four producers scores from 9/100 to 15/100. Those profiles show no known activist or DEI pattern. Gleason’s title interviews use female sexuality, open religious choice, and support for a possibly gay child as themes. That title framing raises context slightly, but it does not show a wider track record.
