The 12th Man follows Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian resistance fighter who survives after a sabotage mission goes wrong. Eleven men are captured or killed, and Jan escapes into the frozen north of Norway in 1943. The Gestapo officer Kurt Stage hunts him while Jan crosses mountains, farms, caves, and snowfields on the way to neutral Sweden. The film has a grim, tense, and very physical survival tone, with cold, hunger, injury, fear, and long stretches of isolation.
Jan stays alive because local Norwegians hide him, feed him, carry him, and guide him. Gudrun and Marius Grønvoll risk their lives for him, while other families, children, nurses, and Sami helpers join the escape. The rescue becomes a story about courage, loyalty, sacrifice, national freedom, and the duty to help someone facing a cruel enemy. The film also shows how one survivor can become a symbol of hope for people living under occupation.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The 12th Man.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast presents Norwegian characters in a Norwegian wartime setting. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays a German officer and speaks German, which fits that role. Women and Sami helpers appear in the local rescue network, not as a diversity-first casting message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers the war, survival, duty to Norway, and the danger of Nazi rule. It does not make modern identity politics, DEI, or activist ideas part of the spoken message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows Jan’s escape and the local people who risk death to save him. Its main ideas are courage, loyalty, sacrifice, and resistance to occupation.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film condemns Nazi rule and the Gestapo during an actual occupation. It does not turn that conflict into a modern attack on family, religion, men, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is a new retelling of Jan Baalsrud’s real escape. No identity-based change to a known person is clearly reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints. Other public discussion focused on historical accuracy, pacing, and patriotism, not woke messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Most key creators have low context scores and mainly work in historical, survival, or commercial genres. Veslemøy Ruud Zwart is the main exception because her wider record includes support for gender equality and criticism of how women are treated on reality television. Director interviews frame the film around courage, solidarity, selflessness, and war memory. The film is not framed around female gaze, empowerment, diversity, representation, or queer themes.
