The Climb follows Kyle and Mike, two childhood friends whose bond survives years of betrayal and anger. The story begins on a bike ride in France, when Mike tells Kyle that he slept with Kyle’s fiancée. The film then jumps through weddings, funerals, family visits, and other milestones in the United States. Its tone mixes awkward jokes, sudden sadness, and long scenes that let arguments play out in real time.
One brief exchange questions whether a women’s-health commercial was written from a male point of view. The story repeatedly shows male cheating, selfishness, and friendship that hurts partners and family. Marissa calls out the damage, but the film gives the most attention and sympathy to the two men. The main theme is the strange loyalty that keeps people tied to a harmful friendship.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Climb.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film has two white male leads and a mostly white supporting cast, with a few brief black roles. It does not present casting as a diversity or identity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film contains one clear gender-focused line during a family scene. Marissa says Kyle’s women’s-health commercial feels like it was written for men. Another character answers that it was written for men, and the exchange is brief and played as a joke. The film does not repeat this idea as a political speech.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story focuses on cheating, loyalty, grief, family, and harmful friendship. It does not make race, sexuality, or group identity the subject of its main conflict.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows male entitlement and a toxic friendship. Mike cheats, sabotages Kyle’s relationships, and demands Kyle’s loyalty, while Marissa calls out the damage. The story treats these as personal flaws and still gives the friendship much of its sympathy. It does not turn them into a broad attack on Western institutions or family life.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film expands an original short into a feature and does not adapt established characters, a famous story, or real historical events. No identity-based character or canon change is part of the film.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No qualifying anti-woke complaint was found in the reviewed coverage. One right-leaning review praised the film for getting through a “woke filter,” but it did not say the film pushes woke content. Other reaction focused on craft, friendship, or gender portrayal.
