Ebony Jackson is a struggling single mother who moves with her three children and her sick mother into a new house in Pittsburgh. She hopes the move will give the family a fresh start, but her drinking, anger, money problems, and past abuse have already damaged their home life. The children begin acting as if a demon controls them, while doctors and child services question whether Ebony is hurting them. The film mixes harsh family drama with possession horror and ends in a dark fight for the children’s lives and souls.
The film makes race and family identity part of the main conflict. Ebony is a black woman with a white mother, and their tense relationship shapes the family’s pain and the demon’s attacks. The story shows Ebony being treated as an angry black mother by medical workers and being watched by child services while she struggles with poverty, trauma, and abuse. The story turns toward Jesus, faith, forgiveness, and family repair, so its social message shares space with a clear Christian answer.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Deliverance.
Woke representation / casting
The film centers on a black mother, her black children, a black social worker, and a black female apostle. The film also makes the mother’s white identity a major part of Alberta, who has a biracial daughter and black grandchildren. Daniels said he chose this family setup to explore life as a black girl with a white mother and a white woman living in black culture. The casting therefore carries a clear identity message beyond ordinary modern casting.
40%
Woke political dialogue
Ebony says a doctor treats her as a black woman with too many children and does not listen to her. A classroom lesson mentions that black Americans suffer a larger share of AIDS deaths and that hospitals ignored one speaker’s sick brother. The movie also has lines about racism, poverty, and family abuse. These lines appear in a few scenes but do not drive long political debates.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Ebony’s race and family history shape the main drama. The film links her poverty, childhood sexual abuse, addiction, and fear of losing her children to problems such as racism and unequal care. It shows doctors and child services doubting her while she tries to protect her children from a demon. The story also presents a white mother living inside a black family and uses that difference to drive conflict. Faith, forgiveness, and family repair finally share the message with the social criticism.
56%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows institutions failing to understand Ebony. A white doctor calls for calm while Ebony says the hospital ignores her children and sees her as an angry black mother. Child services watches the family and can take the children because of Ebony’s drinking, violence, and unstable homes. The story also points to poverty, medical costs, and unequal treatment as part of the family’s pressure. The ending does not reject every institution, since a social worker later helps Ebony regain custody.
50%
Woke character or canon changes
The reported Ammons case had a black mother, but the film gives Ebony a white mother and makes the family biracial. The real religious rite was led by a male Catholic priest, but the film uses black female apostle Bernice James. Daniels said the changes were meant to explore life as a black girl with a white mother and to show women who do this religious work. These identity changes affect the main family conflict and the final rescue.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction. Other posts focused on weak scares, religious questions, or ordinary quality complaints.

Creator track record context
Lee Daniels has a strong record of black and queer representation and public activism. Several producers have worked often on black-centered or social-justice stories. The two writers have little public record of activist or identity-focused work. Daniels is the main creator link, so the track record is high even though the writing team is mixed.
