Theo Decker is a New York boy whose mother dies in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After he survives, he takes a small Dutch painting called The Goldfinch and hides it. Theo moves between a rich family in Manhattan, a troubled home in Nevada, and adult work with antiques and crime. The film has a sad, serious tone as Theo carries grief, guilt, drug use, and fear into adulthood.
The film gives one brief same-sex moment when Boris kisses Theo. The movie leaves their exact feelings unclear, so the moment does not become the main story. Their friendship changes Theo’s choices as he deals with loss, addiction, guilt, and the cost of hiding a crime. The story treats beauty, family failure, and rich people as parts of Theo’s personal struggle.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Goldfinch.

Identity-driven story themes
The film shows Boris kissing Theo on the mouth. Theo and Boris share a close friendship, but the film leaves their exact relationship unclear. The story centers on grief, addiction, crime, and art rather than sexuality. The same-sex material is brief and does not drive the main plot.
10%
Western institutional / cultural critique

0%
Woke character or canon changes

Creator track record context
The cached context gives Nina Jacobson 69 and Courtenay Valenti 58 because of diversity-focused work. Brad Simpson is 43, while Mari-Jo Winkler’s score mainly reflects environmental work. John Crowley is 20, Peter Straughan is 19, Donna Tartt is 0, and Ellen Chenoweth is 10 in the cached context. This mixed record supports a moderate context score, but it does not show that this film is an activist project.
